Many of us are feeling the weight of what is happening in our country right now. The headlines can feel exhausting, heartbreaking, and overwhelming at times. But one of the most powerful things we can do in difficult moments is stay connected, stay informed, and stay engaged in community.
Taking action together — whether through visibility events, postcards to voters, or simply showing up for one another — reminds us that democracy is not something we watch from the sidelines. It belongs to all of us.
As we move forward together, we continue choosing hope, compassion, inclusion, courage, and people power.

No Payouts for Insurrectionists
The Department of Justice announced the creation of a nearly $1.8B slush fund that Trump plans to use to pay insurrectionists with our tax dollars. And if that was not enough, Trump is claiming that this was in “exchange” for dropping his lawsuit against the IRS, and had his henchmen at the DOJ include language demanding permanent protection from prosecution for Trump and his family.
Beyond the reality that this is yet another brazen attempt at stealing public funds to reward his cronies, this is unconstitutional. Only Congress can decide how our funds are spent, and even the GOP agrees. But instead of blocking the slush fund, Republicans packed up and went home for recess early while they buy more time to avoid doing anything on the slush fund and prepare to jam through billions for ICE and Border Patrol.
Let’s call their bluff and see what, if anything, Republicans are willing to stand for besides their wannabe King. There are several pieces of legislation in Congress that would block this money and create guardrails around federal settlement funds.
Every Member of Congress, regardless of party, should be opposed to this egregious overreach. Urge them to block Trump's slush fund now.

End the Illegal Blockade on Cuba
Over the last five months, the Trump administration has pushed Cuba deeper into a humanitarian catastrophe while openly floating the possibility of regime change and military action.
In January, Trump declared Cuba an “extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security and signed an executive order threatening tariffs and penalties against countries that supply oil to the island. Since then, the administration has pressured and blocked fuel shipments from countries like Venezuela and Mexico, effectively imposing an energy blockade on Cuba. The consequences have been devastating.
Hospitals, schools, public transportation systems, water infrastructure, and the electrical grid have all been pushed to the brink. Entire cities have faced blackouts lasting more than 20 hours a day. Fuel shortages have disrupted surgeries, food distribution, garbage collection, and emergency services. The U.S. is committing an economic assault on the basic infrastructure of Cuba and inflicting collective punishment. This is a manufactured humanitarian crisis, all to destabilize Cuba, as Trump said, he wants the country to be available for ‘taking’.
Congress cannot remain silent while the administration manufactures a humanitarian crisis and threatens military action. We call on Members of Congress to:
Oppose any unauthorized military action against Cuba.
Block funding for escalation, intervention, or regime-change operations.
Push to end sanctions and fuel restrictions that are collectively punishing the Cuban people.
Demand diplomacy, humanitarian relief, and respect for Cuban sovereignty.

No Warrantless AI Mass Surveillance
The War on Terror-era legislation that authorized decades of civil liberties-eroding mass surveillance is set to expire on June 12. Congress must overhaul the bill to protect our privacy - or allow it to expire.
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was passed in 2008 as a counterterrorist measure, but has a long history of abuse from the federal government, especially when it comes to surveillance. Congress has a choice to make: Will they greenlight warrantless mass surveillance, or hold the line and reject any effort to move forward without serious privacy guardrails. FISA as it is currently written:
Allows warrantless backdoor surveillance of people in and out of the country
Offers little to no protections against the administration targeting critics, activists, religious minorities, or communities of color
Actively chills our freedoms of speech and association
Two years ago, this reauthorization legislation sailed through Congress with bipartisan support. That can’t happen again. Democratic leadership and members must hold the line for our civil liberties. And any Democrat or Republican voting for unfettered spying on US citizens should hear from their constituents.
Let your Members of Congress know you expect them to reject reauthorization unless it includes significant reforms to protect our civil liberties against this authoritarian regime. Two years ago, this reauthorization legislation sailed through Congress with bipartisan support. That can’t happen again. Democratic leadership and members must hold the line for our civil liberties. And any Democrat or Republican voting for unfettered spying on US citizens should hear from their constituents. The issue here is fairly wonky, but we have written talking points for you.
Close the backdoor search loophole: The government should not continue to be allowed to access personal communications without a warrant to consistently protect personal privacy.
Close the data broker loophole: Intelligence agencies and law enforcement must be held to the same standard of privacy protection when purchasing data from commercial brokers. In the age of AI this protection is essential to preventing unprecedented government collection of our data.

Call your members of Congress!
We've made this easy with handy tap-to-call buttons. If you've never done it before, scroll down a bit and read our tips for making effective calls.
Kaua'i has three members of Congress, two in the Senate and one in the House of Representatives. Here they are:
Senator Brian Schatz
Senator Mazie Hirono
Representative Jill Tokuda
The top number is their local office; the bottom number is Washington.
Making Effective Calls
Keep it simple, brief, and to the point. If it helps, write it down before calling. Be sure to mention that you are a constituent, and say your city and ZIP code. This is super important if you wind up talking to voice mail!
The assistant you reach may not be familiar with the issue you're calling about, so have something basic to say if it sounds like they need to be brought up to speed.
Be courteous, kind, and polite. Share why you care; if you have a personal story to tell, be sure to share it.
We're your friends, neighbors, and ohana, doing our best to hold the line against fascism in Washington.
